So about this DP Freestyler....?
« on: August 23, 2010, 09:32 PM »
Ok so I'm going ahead with this build based on my BITD bike from 1985, but I need some advice....

Basically how accurate to the original do you think I should aim for?

I ask because I'm pretty certain I had KO bits on my original bike....Pedals, brakes etc....

Now do you think I should try and recreate my original ride exactly (down to the KO parts)
or should I build it as if I were building it now, if you know what I mean.....ie use Shimano pedals
and DC brakes instead of KO ones....?

Interested to hear your thoughts!

  :)

PS I already bought the F&F, Z-Hubs, Seatclamp and Grips, so I am serious about it!  ;D

if it was me i'd do it bang on to how you had it.
its nice to have all the top makes on a bike now days but i rember having cheap parts as well as good stuff on my bike.
so long as i could ride it i never bothered lol.
i think it would mean more to you to do it just as it was  :)

I always plan my builds tothe way I wanted them back in the day  :daumenhoch: but we all have budgets so compomise has to take place.  In saying that I would love to have my original bike back from the 80'sjust the way it was  :4_17_5:

Thanks guys....yeah that's the thing....If I could have persuaded my parents to buy me Dia Compes instead of Changstars
or Shimanos instead of Wellgos I would have....

Same for tyres, we went for Comp III cheapos because we were always getting through them with our 'ET skids'....  ;D

It's a strange dilemma to be in.....

Been through this recently myself. I build all my bikes as I'd have done if I'd had the money BITD not factory spec but I did a copy of my Mongoose Cali recently and really enjoyed it. GT bars and black Tuffs but Lee Chi brakes & copy MX seatpost clamp.

I rode it for a bit then swapped the frame & a bit of cash for a beat-up Supergoose at MK which is the kind of thing we used to do, so now it's like a continuation of being 13 again - Arayas & DC calipers might be next on the swap list I think!

Build it how you had it first, enjoy it then upgrade it to how you'd have wanted it, but be realistic with what you spend - remember you all couldn't afford Flights back then but DC calipers were a possibility ;-)
Still limping......

Is this going to be a rider?  If so, I'd build it how you wish you could have had it.  If it's just for posterity, I'd try to stay original (at least to begin with).  Any pics of the progress?

I've got most of the bits now, but some of them need stripping, cleaning etc....

However we are now only 6 weeks away from our first baby being born, so the build is on hold for now....

But I think it will be my refuge when the new arrival is making too much noise. so it might be done for summer....  :daumenhoch:

HI if its a rider build it as you would like it now, why do it twice, anyway once youve built it you will want another frame that you wished you had
then it all starts again, hence the rad bmx desease :LolLolLolLol: :daumenhoch:

Have you any old  pictures of the original bike , what coulr scheme was it ?  :)

As others have said , keep near to the original spec as poss  :daumenhoch:
, but you may find when you look back you'll probably change one or two things as not all bikes were as perfect as you remembered

Loads of swapping parts with mates  made your  bikes , look like a jumble sale bikes  :D

Don't even mention , us as 12 year olds  spraying frames in the garage aswell  :idiot2:

nice, i'm building a dp to match mine from bitd also from 1985.i'm gonna build it to the exact spec it was....even though i wouldn't use some of the bits on it today.it was quite a decent spec with mike buff z's-elina flyte tech seat-sugino opc-mks grafight's.but had a copy forklifter stem and copy mushies etc.i've got most of the bits now,so once the f & f have been painted i can't wait to build it  :)
