Just ordered new bike!
« on: August 10, 2010, 09:06 PM »
I reckon I need something a bit more 'nu skool' so i've ordered up a 2010 S&M .38 special.

Gonna build it with S&M Race XLT bars and forks, profile bossless cranks with ti GDH axle/hardware, new splined race sprocket, industry nine wheels, DTH tyres, Thomson masterpeice post, Profile stem wth ti bolts. Probably Pauls brake and lever.

Gonna be white frame, everything else black.

Target weight: 20 lbs but it's gonna be tight I think.

Frame's in stock at 4down but they have to get the forks in for me so I reckon a week or two before she's ready to go. Excited? yes.

Anyone got any 38 spesh pics?

Don't think it'll look the part unless gossa has the matching factory kit to go with it!!
Is this for a comeback Clive or just a playbike??

Mmm, have been eyeing up Troy Lees website! No comeback though, want to do a few races for fun and my 30lb tuff wheeled behemoth just isn't doing it. Not sure i'm going to get one with modern day race tyres though and 100psi? Jeeze!

Clive, I spend ONE day hanging out with you at a BMX track and you go straight out and get an S&M. Those Moeller tricks you were doing must have affected you.

Thats great, I LOVE a modern race bike. Cant wait to see you on it. (S&M have just bought out a new race shirt)

Haha, remember I had an S&M before you Alex!! Yeah, it was a toss up between the .38 and a Standard (rode Dylan Claytons at Gosport last weekend) but at the end of the day, it's an S&M, the little punk ass company run by that kid that used to hammer the back ends onto Auburn CR20's at MOR DISTR.  I love the fact that Chris has achieved the impossible, he ran GT out of Huntingdon Beach.

I considered a new school alloy race frame with carbon forks and mountain bike cranks................FOR ABOUT TEN SECONDS, DAH!!!

Oh dont get me wrong Clive. Even tho I used to only know you as a GT race guy, I now know your S&M roots. Even better to see its not just your past, S&M is also your present .... and your future ....!!!! (please read that last bit in a deep, mystical voice)

I'm sure Dylan could put anything around a track faster and smoother than most of us! I really am struggling with some of the new school trends though, someone has removed the 'MX' from 'BMX' at some point in the last ten years without me noticing! I mean, BMX is a 20x2.125 comp3 at Tim Marches preferred 38psi and 44/16 is it not??? Well when tracks were made of mud you put your foot out and elbows up in the non tarmac berms then maybe so, but not anymore!

Like a James Earl Jones voice? OK mate! I was GT anti factory because it was so gay! When I rode backyard jams in full neon GT uniform it was because it was just so queer that everything went street and grimy and GT went super gay! I wrote underneath the big GT logo in black marker 'employ illegal immigrants". I also picked Will Smyth up from Heathrow once in full GT neon unifrom, he laughed so much but i'm not sure if he shared the joke or was just really embarrassed for me!

Anyway, let's just hope I get one with it! It's gonna be pimp though.......

Alex, after riding my Holmes at MK I've also been hankering after a 38 Spesh.  I've been offered a 21.25 with the logo on the seat tube (might just be a sticker tho). If anyone knows how old it is you will -  Waiting for some pics

I've been riding a NS Alum One frame for a while, but I miss the feeling of the bike moving beneath me as it flexes - the One feels dead in comparison to my Holmes!

I'm glad someone else has noticed.

BMX (or should that be Dirt Velo) still rocks, but with the passage of time (and inclusion in the Olympics), it has lost some of its soul.

It has very little of it's real soul left Mike, it's a very different sport, better in many ways, nowhere near as good in many others.  I think the 'track' influence is really noticeable, I mean tarmac turns and everyone clipped in following each other (nowhere near as much elbow out, berm bashing corner passing as yesteryear) really isn't BMX racing as it was, it's more about outpowering or out smoothing the competition down the straights and through the sections.

I guess modern day BMX in motorcycle terms is supermoto? A hybrid of sports. Not that todays BMX isn't exciting, it is faster and smoother and at WC and Olympic level it is dazzling but i'd still would have preferred it take another route, more MX, more like the Vans Triple crown, downhill, big knarly jumps etc.

Still, it is what it is and it is cool but I just don't see even at National level that it has progressed in 20 years. I remember getting to Wigan, I guess mid eighties and was just wondering if I could even get around the track! It seems like you can manual everything on todays tracks but if you had to get air on the old tracks, it was impossible to ride most of the jumps. Again, it's super impressive that the tops riders can manual around practically the whole track but I want to see big air, I want to see danger, action, knarliness, I guess i want to see Bicycle Moto Cross.........

I reckon it'll break the 20lb barrier Clive, my dialled cruiser doesnt have and super light parts and its 22lb.  :Great_Britain:

I remember riding tracks all round the world from 1980-1983 and although we had a blast then i think todays tracks are much much better, the sport is very different now with tarmac and clips, but at least there are jumps every few metres and a real good rider will win without being just the best/strongest pedaller, getting thru/over jumps quickly wins a lot of races now.

Check out the vids of us racing back in the day and they were really just pedalling races with a few little jumps thrown in.

Clips have made a big difference in the way riders jump, on flats you have to 'jump' a double, on clips you do jump but you follow the contour of the jumps just inches above them.

Good or bad its just the way it is now.  ;)

Kdub, it is a different style for sure and much better in so many ways, faster, smoother and so on but I still feel it's missing the MX.

Keith, remember Brum wheels, cooksmoor, that was BMX for me, fast, scary, dangerous even, so the natural evolution of it for me would be the Vans Triple Crown where the track is the competition as much as the other riders.  I raced Cheddar year before last in 20" and even though I didn't get out of my motos I really hadn't ridden a 20" for about ten years yet I could still jump everything (badly) and even cleaned the third straight, that can't be right can it??

However, BMX racers today are faster, smoother, fitter and the racing is incredible, especially at WC level, personally I just think it took a more 'track' influenced route rather than a more 'MX' route. Not a bad thing, just would have been interesting to see what would have happened if it had gone the other way no?

It's all just still kids on bikes though, that's what it's all about......

If one of the winningest riders to come from the UK can jump a straight cleanly after being out've the sport for a few years it doesnt mean that straight is easy.

Your jumping skill is still with you Clive, all your skills are, the only thing lacking is your fitness which when it returns (it will) will enable you to use your skills more safely and for longer.

I know exactly what you mean about the direction bmx has gone in and this is excactly why i race 4x as well to get my fix of 'bicycle moto cross', dirt (muddy when it rains), ungroomed tracks, sideways action, big big jumps and so much fun!!!

I get the best of both worlds!!!   :daumenhoch:
