Powder on Chromoly

Watching American Chopper last night and they were building the NAPA Drag Bike.
When it came to the powder / paint decision, as it was a Chromoly frame, they said powder was a no-no because of the heat!
Sorry if this is an old question but what's the deal? I guess these guys know what they're talking about.
Are folk on here potentially harming their builds by having them powdered?

that's strange, did they weld it? with a special cold welder
it's not that hot in a powder coat oven. Mind you, they are gonna put a drag bike engine in it. But still, it sounds like a load of ball sacks.
in that case, they better not get any heat off the engine on the frame or senior might come off and rip his tash off.

yeah but thats Tele not real life - they got to have shit to say to fill up the 45 mins that make up the show.   I know from experience you cant trust what you see on tele and things are manipulated - you dont really believe 60 minute make over takes 60 mins?

I also guess there is more stress on a dragbike frame than a bmx but would be good to hear what SBD thinks

most new skool frames are chromolly and powderoated, i think the point

he was getting at is that at extreme heat it has to be vitouros enamal like our

hobs are painted with, powders fine but cant take the heat of a drag bke

I'd agree if it was some bullshit chat about whatnot and bollocks but when it comes to tech. I doubt it.
You live and die by your rep in any line of work and I don't think that would be risked just to fill air time.

It would make more sense as SBD says if the issue was about heat coming from the bike but they went with a custom paint job not sure if it was enamaled
I've had a look on youtube but no luck with that part of the show. Anyone know if it's online anywhere?

i didnt see the programe but maybe the line he's coming from is stress on the metal, cold wet paint

adds no stress where as powder is baked at 400f for 20 minutes minimum, adding to that the heat

from the drag engine and maybe it's too much

Interesting, so the powder process can have a detrimental effect on CroMo (even if it's minimal).

tbh  it's  like saying 20 more kilos in

weight could bring a plane down, it's all in the maths and with a drag bike every

Could not agree more and this is why i said what i did.  When i worked at the Flour Milling and Baking Research Association (FMBRA) and Arthur C Clarkes film crew came to the lab to make an episode of the Mysterious Worlds show they pressured us into trying to say things that were simply not true for the sake of bullshit TV, so we told em where to get off - but still they did not take our advice and produced what i consider to be a total bullshit show for tele for the sake of it
