From what I understand, you can sandblast the chrome off.
This is ok for powder coating
However if your are going to wet spray it then you will end up with an orange peel texture, I believe that if you want to wet spray then having it chemically dipped is the best way for a really great spray job.
Someone with far more knowledge will be able to either confirm this or show me to be a complete novice....
