Budget build pt2 - Big Wheels keep on turnin'
« on: July 21, 2010, 07:57 AM »
I'm gonna be helping my dad build this, a 1984 Falcon Pro cruiser F&F:

It will be built as a budget rider (maybe occasional racer); a Falcon Pro was my dad's first cruiser BitD. We'll be using mix n match parts, so we'll be looking for cheap 10mm hubs, 3-piece crank, racing stem etc etc if anyone has owt? We'd prefer rider condition bits that still work well.

Bof - you're on mate, we'll take the rims, and also tyres if you do turn any up.
We'll not be at Coppull this weekend, so we can meet up another time.
Cheers, Jon

Andy,

Would be going for 41:18 (authentic OS style) or 39:17. Very unlikely to want/need to change gearing once it's up and running.
Seatpost would be normal diameter.
Colour scheme could be anything, this is gonna be a proper mix n match rider. Given a choice would probably prefer chrome/silver/red/black or any variation! (So far got chrome frame/fork/seatclamp/headset/bars, black seat/rims if Bof's rims are the ones I'm thinking of and hopefully red grips).

Andy - top banana  :daumenhoch:

Yep, can we take the Shimano 17T freewheel (Suntour fine though if there's owt wrong with the Shimano one).
tuf neck 39T chainwheel.
black rear brake cable.
Rooski special handcrafted seatpost, in whatever length is standard.

Cheers, Jon
(I assume it's a full chainwheel, so don't need a separate spider).

18T Suntour freewheel would be perfect then!
A rh lever would be good as we've only got a battered one that I was gonna try and restore.
Yes, I'll bring some cash on Tuesday, so just let me know at some point how much. I'll be there rain or shine.

Sourcing parts is going well. Might have hubs and tyres to go with the rims courtesy of Bofster. We now only defo need spokes, someone to build the wheels, crank+BB, pedals, chain and stem. Happy days!
ps I'll have some pound notes with me this weekend for any likely bits :daumenhoch:

Update, this is what we have so far (not including brake, lever etc). Pretty much all the other essential stuff is ordered or on the way, wheels will be built soon also:

Huge thanks to all the Northern Monkeys that have sold me stuff very cheap, or donated parts  :smitten:

Next stage - built up finger tight this afternoon. I found out that we need a different spacer for the bottom bracket and a tophat washer for the chainwheel. I'm very pleased with it so far:

I think so!  It's my dad's bike so I'll see what he says.

It's my dad's bike ....

that still brings a smile to my face.

I'm sure it'll be wiped off though when I get beaten by a 60 year old at the next Bradford regional!

Decals on the way from del  :daumenhoch:
Thanks Rooski for the spacer tube and MotomagII for the tophat washer (we did need the wider one)  :4_17_5:
It all went together well last night, needed quite a few spacers for that width of crank axle, but all done now. I had a ride up and down the pavement in the dark. First impressions - light (for an OS cruiser), springy, and fairly short (but definitely rideable). Although the frame feels a little bit flexy, the drive train certainly isn't, and it leaps forward when you push down on the pedals.

Greg - I'll definitely take that frame pad when I next see you if it's still going, just let me know of fundage required  :daumenhoch:
