Getting this razzer facking spider off...

Hi everyone

So I'm beginning the restoration of my DP and having a little trouble getting the spider off the crank.

It's a Takagi crank, 1 piece, from yonks ago, like early 80's. I've taken a pic, looking at the back of the spider:



How do I get this off? I can see a notch for something to use to turn it but looking in my huge box of spanners, there ain't one like that! Also, is it left or right handed thread?

Great fun doing this, even if I do get a bit Mutley about it. It takes me back to 1984 and trying desperately to get my bike fixed before the paper round the next morning

i had to buy set pipe griops they open right up to fit that and the thread is backwards on it too so turn opposite way to norm to loosen it

this nut undoes anti-clockwise,

    i.e  normal way,

 get some big fook-off mole grips on it or tw@t it off with a lump hamer and chisel, using the cut out,

 the shock useing this tac-tic can sometimes help free'ing it...

I use Stilsons to remove mine, fits the slots just right

Or even easier, put it in a vice & turn use the crank arm against it, that way you have two hands to use to turn it

be careful not to batter the that PPP powerdisc, it should strip and polish up loverly, nice bit of kit that

Put 2 blocks of wood in a vice , then clamp the power disc in between them nice and tight . Then tape the end of a large screwdriver up with insulation tape so doesn't damage the disc. Then using the screwdriver as a drift in the notch on the retaining bolt , hammer the screwdriver against the retaining nut nice and sharply anticlockwise till it comes loose

I'm chuffed you recognise it Rodgy! I loved that disc when I got it, I lost it briefly thanks to a local tea-leaf but got it back I know nothing about them now but remember being so pleased with it

My Takagi crank is a little corroded, possibly saveable. I saw a Haro 1 piece for £20, might get that and move the disc over...

Well, once I knew it was anticlockwise it was easy from there. I found a piece of painted kitchen hardware (a brace for two panels), popped it in the notch and drifted it right off. The disc is fab, looks great now it's clean and I bought that Haro 1 piece because it's shiny

On to the Skyways next. I lent my fully built DP to a friend years ago so that he could ride round some bug meet on old school wheels. He delightfully fitted some nice new black brake blocks, onto my nice white Skyways. Here's the mess:






But 15 mins with 150 grit paper and 5 mins qith 160bar jet wash and:







And finally into some bleach:







In case you're wondering, it turns out Skyways fit nicely inside an up turned bin lid which sits well in an old wheel barrow!

The rear one is next weekends little project.

Brakes are going to give me a problem I reckon. I've got one Dia Comp 1000 which is rough and a Shimano Tourney 88S in blue. I've seen a FS880/R901 set, with levers and cables, NOS, for £160, and they're the right colour too. Is that a good price?

I'm gonna be spending like crazy All for a rider for my boy, hope he looks after it!

I had the frame powdered in black (son's choice, I wanted chrome but the finisher said it wasn't coming up well, my powdered choice was white but as it's his bike, this time round, the son won)

I will get a set of red decals and I've started the red/black and white scheme. Pics of the frame and forks when I can...
