Building a DP Firebird Freestyler, need advice...
« on: June 27, 2010, 02:26 PM »
Hi all

I have a DP Firebird Freestyler frame and freestyle forks, a pair of CW's, a pair of Skyways and a 1 piece crank. I need to put it all back together but don't know what size of parts I'm after.

I figure I need:

headset: 1"?
Stem
Bottom Bracket: dunno what size
Pedals: 1/2"?
Brakes

Any advice on putting this together? (Other than the "don't bother" sort  :2funny:)

Thanks

Plinth

Headset: 1"
Old School stems are a standard size
Bottom Bracket: US
Pedals: 1/2" for 1 piece crank
Brakes: Dia compe 880 front and 901 at back or nippons or 1000

the best bit of advice is to plan what you want to achieve and take your time.  DP's are 1 sweet bike looking forward to seeing it built :smitten:

 ;D

Thanks guys, hands off my forks fischflo!

I'm a newbie to this (well I forgot all I knew bitd which at the time was everthing :) ).

When you say US for the BB, what does that mean?

My frame is number 0323, I put pics of it up a while back but then some stuff happened and it got the back seat. Now it's been stripped and powdered in black (the finisher said he couldn't get it chromed well enough thanks to some serious pitting but the black looks sweet). I've got some ruff white tuffs so they'll be going into some bleach solution soon.

I'm off to the store for some bits and bobs. Really want a black or silver tuff neck now :)

Well the Skyways are in bleach and the new brakes turned up today:

Ohhh they're nice! Now starting to wonder if I should be giving this to my 11 year old, reckon I should be getting him some new school bike, like a felt or something. If he brings my DP home bent...  :knuppel2:

Do not give to an 11 year old... get them a new school machine that can take some abuse as he learns... save this for cruising around the skateparks yourself...  :daumenhoch:

got any more pics of pre build bits...

Reckon you're right, I'll get him one of those Felt jobbies.

When all the bits are here I'll get pics. I've got a Petes Precision Products chain ring coming (hope it fits my power disc!), a Haro crank, shark bites and a few bits n bobs.

In this build the bit I'm dreading is putting the decals on. Not ordered them yet but will do soon. I found a set on a dedicated dp site, they do pads too. Is that anyone from here?

dude...seriously... don't be put off by child based sticker disaster memories... its probably the best bit...

'brand new decals over a fresh powder job... mmmmm'

get some white Jif and give them wheels a good scrub before you bleach em...  :daumenhoch:

decals on mine are from Steve... if you need to know anything ask him. His enthusiasm for DPs got me so hyped to build and ride mine and the pics he has collected are a wicked resource when choosing colourways.

Theres not many black DPs about as it wasn't a 'factory colour' so it will be good to see one built up ...

check these if you want some decent cheap tyres... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/20-x-1-75-BMX-tyres-BLACK-AMBER-wall-OLD-skool-/190391524116?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_sportsleisure_cycling_bikeparts_SR&var=&hash=item721677b69f

How they look...

New chain wheel arrived today:

Goes well with my power disc I think :)

Thanks for the tip on the tyres Ed, snagged a pair of those too.

I did scrub the Skyways first and they are in bleach now but it isn't making a lot of difference yet. I had to get normal bleach, thinking I might go to something stronger. I read that you need to use textile bleach but couldn't find it. I got strange looks when I bought 8 litres of normal bleach!

I never got to dunk my OGKs as a combo of scrubbing, bleach and white jif got them clean - really stubborn marks and brake block rub I got off with that cloth backed sandpaper stuff ... forgot what its called doh  :2funny:
