Over rated-Under rated
« on: August 18, 2005, 12:01 PM »
bikes, parts etc, not all big name parts are as good as the hype or how you remember them, some have been pedastilled through old school bias as some have been dismissed, interested to know which products and bits you think are over rated or under rated.

eg,
Over rated

Hutch
chome crap, plenty snapped BITD, crap product sold on the reputation of class Team riders
Diamond Back
Sold to those who couldnt afford a GT, Skyway etc, bit like a poor mans rolls royce.
SE Frames
Look nice but not the strongest frames for the money.
Graphite Tuffs
Give me a break!, oh they will very easily.
Robinson Pro Bars
They look and ride fantastic but have to be the weakest bars ever made

Under Rated

Raliegh Extra Burner
What a fantastic looking BMX, strong as foook
Suntour Stems
compared to hutch tuf-neck,redline,whatever, no stem works as well as the common suntour
Zytecs
Victim of tuff snobbery, sealed bearings and these baby's will forgive long after tuffs have given up
Copy Comp lll's
If your gonna use you bike lots n lots you cant beat em, cheap as f... and when dirty n used who but the most anal will notice

i do, as most know, take the mick outa burners and owners, Gypo's etc but the bikes are a true representation of old school, possibly above all others, i have no desire to own one but credit where credit due. :)

i also possess various products i listed in over rated section, so dis me if you wish, but a lot of big name stuff is crap, im sure theres loads more but at mo can't bring to mind.

Skinny birds def over rated but they are good for throwin about the bedroom, bigger bird feel loads and look loads sexier, though the ladies in my pic are lush you would feel a bit concious walkin down the street in front of your mam with them ;D

Over rated - Haro Freestyler Gen 1 ( still cool as fook tho')

Under rated - Raleigh AeroPro Burner.....gotta be the most underrated bike ever - superb build quality - fantastic Geometry - top end parts - and a complete bike for a few quid more than a T/A frame & Fork would have cost Ya!!

Would have sold loads if it had a Kuwahara sticker!!

Good

ESP stems as good if not better than any hype about them
Hutch Head locks chrome might come off but no loose head set ever cool by me
Front Brakes on race bikes how may suckers have I out braked into tight 180 berms (Remember Teeside Mr Ruffell)
185mm Redline Flights might bend spindles like they are butter but no better advantage out the gate exists
Redline forklifter Bars 20years of abuse and no bends yet.

Bad
Race incs and Loop tail rippers weak as Feck
The Head angles of JMC and March Bikes no good what so ever on a fast dry track (I own a JMC Shadow I know)
Hutch Forks look at them they bend (three sets in 1984)
Grippa and Comp 4 tyres WHY comp 2 and three were much better
Hutch Aero speeds recongnised a crap even back then

Later

A.
Why oh why do I still buy kids bikes!

coaster brake rear tuffs would crack all round the hub and the metal hub fronts would collapse.tuf neck hollow stem bolts would break every time you wanted to change f+f.most stuff lasted quite well for the technology we had back then.lets just say it wasn't supposed to last forever ! ;)

BITD I think the Mongoose Proclass was about the most expensive complete bike you could buy which retailed at £399. The DB Turbo was a bargain at £335, give me one of those over the Mongoose any day!

The Hutch Pro Star was the most expensive bike bitd approx £1000.

Ok, I am biased but I love the Mongoose Pro Class, the DB HL Turbo is gorgeous but I don't think the Pro Class should be so easily dismissed.
