Rippers were looptail up until 1985, when they made the newer rear end with non looped seat/chain stays. the 85 model had STRAIGHT chainstays, and earned it the name the Straightstay Ripper. In 1986, they made the chinstays 'snake' style, with curves in. So the 85 straight stay is actually very rare as only made for one year, though they do crop up often, and dont go for as much as a slightly more common pre 85 loopy.
The newer rear end 86 onwards remained unchanged all the way through the 90s , including when they starting making them in taiwan but still US owned... then the awful Fuji owned rippers came out with a whole new design.......
