nice!  explain how the self tightening head set works?

It has a spring around the forks and notches in the top of the race.   You ratchet the spring until its sprung enough so that its constantly tightening the race and not slacking off.   If you loosen it by hand then it tightens up again.

ah yea, I know exactly what you mean!  So it actually works then?

I've had one on my GT24 and but I had it too slack (came loose after a few outings but only to the point of the spring stopping it getting any looser) so I knocked it up a couple of notches and its been reet since.   So yes I think they do work.   Its quite a high stack height though because the top race incorporates the Spring and the bottom has  a dirt skirt device on it so it probably adds around 10mm (or more) to the setup height.
