S&M Spotters Guide
« on: May 05, 2010, 09:08 PM »
Can anyone help point me in the right direction. Serial number clues, designs changes etc.
I've got a chance of buying one but I'd like to know what's what.

Thanks in advance, Paul :)

I've had a look around the usual places and I'm getting a better idea.
I could still do with knowing how to read a serial number ???

I dont think you can date frames from the serial number, if its a nineties frame you're looking at it'll have a three letter/4 digit serial number

Dirtbike SMD ****
Holmes HXL ****
Challenger SCP **** or SCP L **** (long version)

Hope that helps...  :daumenhoch:

Edit.... i typed that out before seeing the reply above... lol

So you only get the year from the design spec.
Double thick drop-outs, chain-stay lugs any other pointers? ???

Double drop out frames are early ones, 90/91 ish

990 lugs on the chainstays were optional so some have em some dont...  :daumenhoch:

OK, thanks for all your help :daumenhoch:
So I guess the double drop-outs were replaced by a single thicker drop out.

also early ones came with plates instead of tubes connecting the seat and chain stays, early ones also had thinner chain and seat stay tubes iirc

Some pictures here on Pink Bike (sorry ::) ):

O/T Just in case 'The Captain’ happens to read this post, this is what came of your Da Bomb CR8 frame you sold me back in November last year.  As you can see I had a little fun with it!!!

Yeah, that's the one. Not much info (Frame No: smd8078) and he didn't get the extra pics to me.
I wanted to work something out but now it's not available :-\

The bike in my second link is frame #SMD8455 and is deffo a 1".  I would therefore assume that the frame you were looking at pre dates it and would also be 1" :daumenhoch:

I have got a frame number from a 1" dirtbike that is SMD9323, although thats an odd one. Most of the latest ones are around 6000ish. Ive also got an Over Sized one that is SMD7728. I guess that frame number could be OS or 1" but it was probably right around the time they started doing Over sized frames (they did both for a while). The clamp on stem in the pic suggests its Over sized.
