180mm or 175mm Crank Arms? Whats the point?
« on: May 19, 2010, 03:36 PM »
Never raced for a team when i was a kid so not sure about this, but whats the point of making cranks 5 mm longer or shorter, would anyone notice, we're talking about 5mm extra or less length here, surely no-one would know the difference would they?

You definitely do notice! More leverage with longer cranks and they suit bigger riders.  They also have the effect of making a gearing feel easier but you have to move your legs in a bigger circle.  Likewise shorter cranks for littler dudes, less leverage but can be easier to spin as your legs have to go in a smaller circle.

I think at my age and level it makes no difference I’ve used 180’s and thought they were too long (I’m 5’ 9”) I’d be much happier with 175’s or even 170’s....I've got short powerful legs  :crazy2: so a shorter crank feels better for me.

TBH put a pair of trainers on with a thick sole or some deep caged pedals and that’ll add 5mm to your crankage.
I might actually build a bike this year instead of just hoarding parts :)

I had 170's on my 82 supergoose rider and fookin hated them  :LolLolLolLol:

Got 180 redline twin pinch jobbies on her now and I love em - great cranks for a rider IMHO  ;)

mongoositis - an expensive disease......
