Cost of re lacing wheels
« on: March 10, 2010, 05:32 PM »
I think I have decided on the wheels for my STA. Got a pair of gsport hubs with decent alex rims, and a primo front / seventies rear laced to some tatty sun rims. Want the Primo / Seventies hubs laced to the alex rims. So, if I remove spokes from both sets and take the hubs and rims to a bike shop, what should i be looking at to get them built back up?

guessing thats plus cost of the spokes? Will stick my head into custom riders at somepoint then. How hard to build them myself?

This are the easiest instructions i have found .. the concept is the same for all 36/48 wheels with any size spokes...  http://bmxmuseum.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=47611

Learning to true & tension a wheel is a useful skill to have, it's not that difficult & if you have a go you can at least undo your work & take them to a cycle shop if you don't manage it. I would start off on an old wheel first, take out all the spoke tension & then see if you can get it back to true & tension... As long as you do some reading into what spokes to turn for a given result then it's quite straight forward. Sheldon Brown's site has some good articles which are easy to work with.
