bent dropouts repair.
« on: March 10, 2010, 04:37 PM »
hi all,  i'm after some help,  please....

i've had a quick search but can't find the answers/info i'm after.  got a frame delivered and the rear dropouts are bent (as per the pics.)  i've been advised not to just bend them back as the powder needs removing,  dropouts need heating up etc etc,  basically,  it needs to be done properly to avoid any further problems.

can anyone point me in the right direction of someone who can do this work for me and who could give me an idea of costs etc.  thanks in advance.

it will bend just by using your fingers??!!  will it weaken it at all just bending it back?

If you are worried about the powdercoat  , then try heating the dropouts in a pan of boiing water ( wear gloves it will be hot ) and slowly but sureley bend it back into shape with your hands , like N2cus said.

it was and a claims on the cards,  thats why i was asking where/who can do the repair because,  hopefully,  i'll have some money to pay for it.

can the bottom part of the dropout be pulled "down"  as well as left and right?

thanks for the help everyone.

If a claim's on the cards, get it done by a professional metal fabricators, heat will probably factor. then a re powder. Sting em for the full amount, although they'll probably try and wriggle out of it.

i'd be tempted to get a bit of cloth on em and a big set of adjustables and bend em back myself.

can you bend the bottom part down though?  i can see you could potentially bend them back in line left/right but what about downwards??

i would'nt have thought it would go down mate.
not without a lot of heat anyway.sawzall or animal are the men to pm.

how hard must they have dropped it to do that to your frame.
i'd have wrapped it round there necks.

thats looks like it was done deliberately, whats the chance of both sides bending the same like that?    ???

get an anvil so it has a solid base, and a lump hammer, and a few smacks should cure it...   :daumenhoch:

i saw detailed pics before i bought it and the packaging was damaged when it was delivered.  it wasn't very well packed but it wasn't done deliberately.  hopefully the courier will cough up.

Thats why I pack dropouts so carefully when I sent a frame, they are so easy to damage.  Ive had one arrive similar to that but not as bad and unless you are careful and bend it back at the bend point you can easily put and 'S' in it.

I sent a TA frame forks this week and encased the drops in bubble wrap cos I know how little care these parcel we send actually recieve in transit.

Pop the rear of the dropout in a vice wrapped in cotton or some other material. if you're carefull it will just go back into place. I've had to do that on a Tange frame inthe past as they're not the strongest in that area. After I'd done it you couldn't tell it had been bent to begin with.
