Tips to make brakes work...
« on: March 04, 2010, 10:15 PM »
I'm running a DC FS880 front through a hollow stem bolt with an inverted DC 86 cable and white DC blocks.

Rear is DC 901 tough a Skyway Spinmaster with DC 86 cables and 80s Kool stop continentals.

Wheels are OGKs.

Yes... all right for the age of my build but USELESS for STOPPING.

Yes - am at least 4 stone heavier than when I was 16 but SURELY I can still get to make my brakes work

I tried to build the bike true to its age but I want to 'ride' my bike and I want my brakes to 'lock' the wheels and I can deal with using new school blocks but I'm not changing the brakes ( DC 880 front 901 back )

( "loose weight" is not an option...  8)

Q. Is there a new block - like the longer kool stops - that work well?
Q. Do I have to lose the spinner
Q. do I need something like the teflon lined powerglide cables - Firebird Steve told me its a must if the cables are being routed through the frame but I've not done that yet

Any advice to make they work would be much appreciated.

ED if you want to use the OS bike as a rider, i'd ditch the OGKs and get some spoked wheels........maybe even some 10mm axled new wheels with chrome rims  :daumenhoch:

If the Koolstop's are not doing the trick maybe worth trying ACS brake blocks; I've heard they work a treat  :daumenhoch:

Cheers everyone ( expect the gay pensioner  :P ... he has a vendetta  :2funny: )

will give these pointers a try. I remember BITD that brakes were the only thing that really made me LOSE IT with my bike -  usually 'cause my dad didn't have any cable cutters... tight c**t.

Pickle - 'Ditch' and 'OGKs' are not words I want to hear  >:( If I had 10mm axle wheels will I have to file the DP drop outs to get them in... thought of that makes me feel a little ill.

Are alloy rims not good then? gotta be chrome eh?

ED your OGKs are 10mm axles you twonk!   :LolLolLolLol: :LolLolLolLol: :LolLolLolLol:

believe me, get some new 10mm chrome rimmed wheels and it will transform the way your bike rides......i bet those OGKs flex like a bastard and with chrome rims you'll be able to have higher PSi in the tyres  :daumenhoch:

Right...RIGHT... you've had it now... err.. IT WAS A TRICK QUESTION  :crazy2: now how silly do you look...  :yahoo_silent:

I was getting confused with the new axles that are fooking big... like 50mm  :buck2: ...BIG!

I LOVES MY OGKS...LOVES EM

Will resort to chrome rimmed spokes as last resort... sticky pads ordered from RAD / spinner gone / caliper springs bent out / OGK rims sanded / cables oiled FINGER CROSSED

damm you Pickle  :tickedoff:  you wait till April 3rd...

Just had my RADBMX brake pads through from Stodgy... combined with losing the Spinmaster, oiled cables and sanded rims on my OGKS they are working a FOOKING TREAT...

Just busted out a sweet endo from the rear pegs in my kitchen... ( no comment from wife ) always a good test for brakes and it took my 14 stone a treat.

Down the Boardroom tonight for some no foot nose picks and a couple of 'Wiltons'  :D

Thanks to all for your help.

i had 901's on my rider with skyways and they work a treat with my 14 stone, i then wanted to do bar spins and tail whips so i fitted a giro with dc bulldogs  but could never get enough brake pressure to lock the back wheel out, i then swapped this set up for acs boa's and rotor the brakes are now sh!t hot , ive just pick up some linaer cables from the rad shop as the dc cables are looking worn, i hope this tops off the setup , i also run the new  long type skyway tuff pad. i know this is n ot eara correct but i think you have to compromise if you want good brakes with a giro/roter imo
