stripping chrome
« on: February 26, 2010, 06:54 PM »
Picked up my stuff from the chromers today.  I asked them to polish a couple of stems for me and when i got there they had been chromed... was quite happy about it till i got them home and found out they also chromed the shafts and now they wont fit inside my forks  :crazy2:
Thing is i've been back and forward to the fookin chromers enough times in the past 6 weeks and i really dont wanna go back.
Is there anything i can do to remove the chrome from the shaft or have i really been shafted and do i have to take another trip back?  ???

nightmare mate  :( couple of real nice stems there. how thick is the chrome then terry, was thinkin you could maybe tape off where how far you want them to go into the frame and then have a go at sanding the rest down. you aint got owt to lose really as this part will never be seen. bet they look real nice in chrome

thats what id do. just a thought mate :daumenhoch:

You could try this not sure how it works though.

Chrome will strip with 12v battery and caustic soda solution, as the sale above states it wont affect the nickel plate that is underneath.

It was ACF Howell in Walsall.  A lot of the stuff i had done was spot on.  You just gotta spend the time talking to the right guy about that you want done .. and explain v e r y    s l o w e l y
I had some aerospeeds done by them .. made over sure they didnt fook them up and when i got them they had underpolised them ... think he was scared when i told him how much they were worth.  the chrome job aint the best but he said he was scared to polish them too much  ???

They are on Croft Street .. near to the Police Station at that main junction.
Rims were £50 each.  i took in loads of stuff and he gave me a price for the lot so i cant really give you many individual prices.  He said he does a frame for £100.  Not sure how much it would be to just strip .. can't imagine it would be much at all though

Gota agree with animal, i've never had any probs with them, and i'm amazed he chromed an alloy stem ... they don't usually go in for chroming alloy ...

2 b honest now I think about it it was always the prices that put me off having alloy chromed by them compared 2 a good old polish .

You're not wrong .. the first time i used them they were resonable .. this last time they charged me £50 per rim .... they are mint but i wont be buying anything that needs chroming again (well, i'll try)  :P
