King of concrete 92 & 93 pictures
« on: January 25, 2010, 07:30 PM »
Found a load of pics in my parents loft & need to scan more in... quality aint great but it was for sure, good times...

Zach Shaw 1992. He was riding a full yellow GT Performer with one off yellow SHEEP t-shirt. This was the first KoC I was involved in & was so stoked to chat with Zach a few times.... wish to fook he'd shut up now!  :LolLolLolLol:

Out of focus & incomplete I love this picture. Dennis Wingham doing the very first backflip fakie in a UK contest, he landed but crashed the rollback only to be mobbed by the locals!

He was the king of the keyhole!

Mad Jon Taylor. Im sure he did this the previous year? I noticed a long time later the dude just behind Jon busting out the moon!!  ;D

I remember there was a shower just before Pro mini so myself & zach helped dry the ramp with our t-shirts!! Would never happen now eh? Gerry Galley invert fakie on a red yellow & green Skyway TA.

Steve Geall, airing that horrible pool is always impressive.

Colin Hunt had no fear, prety sure he is about 14 or 15 here?

Brian Wills... clearly went wrong somewhere?

Jamie Bestwick. As I said be fore this was the first KoC I was involved in & for my efforts Hawkins gave me the same Vision t-shirt as Jamie, I was stoked with that thing for a long time!!

I remember Chase coming through the doors of the park & registered with Jenny Catlow while Effrain stood there gobsmacked to which Jenny says "Oh Effraim dont be silly... Mr Gouin you are my sons hero"  :LolLolLolLol: Thanks Mum!

Mirra, 1993. Doing high air for record breakers whilst riding for Hoffman. He turned up on a Big Daddy with prototpe super forks which promptly fell to bits so he used Jim Stevens Condor, pictured here..

Mirra 1993. Pretty sure this was in the Pro Vert comp? Later that day this bike (Jim Stevens Condor) along with my beloved Homeless Soul Bro was stolen never to be seen again  :(

Aaaaaaaaanyway, more soon....

awesome pics  :daumenhoch: thanks for that  :)

yeah the early prototype super forks could fall to pieces. talking with factory workers, the prototype superfork steerer tubes were not that thick, about the same thickness as a regular steerer tube. with the stem being clamped on tight it could distort the metal to where it would fatigue it causing it to break at some point right under the stem, just like what happened to mirras fork.
notice how thin the steerer is on this prototype

coarse they updated them with a mega thick steerer tube before they were fully released and the problem pretty much went away  :daumenhoch:

Wicked pics DJ, that 92 KOC was the first one I went to, was so good, I still remember Kris Akabusi screaming and shouting when Mirra was doing the high air!

I dont think thats Mirra in the last pic though, different lid and elbow pads, no gloves and not Mirra stylie....

Cheers

Paul

Nice pics. It brings back some memories of king of concrete.

By the way you are wrong about the first fakie backflip by a British rider. That was done by some nutter from Kettering. It was at a ukbfa competition at Milton Keynes. His routine consisted off. Dropping in from one quarter pipe riding like fook and doing a massive backflip about 6ft out and landing on the floor. Only to get mobbed by the crowd. Then he got on his bike and done it again. Only this time when he landed he broke both his wrists!! Believe me if you saw this you wouldn't forget it. It was a few weeks after Hoffman had done his backflips at Mansfield. Where he pulled the first 180 one. Now called a flair. The first vert backflip attempt was by Hoffman a few weeks before that at Paris. But he didn't pull it. There was a couple of riders from the states that done back flips from jump ramps in the early 80's though. So they were really the first.  :daumenhoch:

Seem to recall a `Mad Eric` Eric Steele iirc and he was bonkers doing a fakie back flip at Southsea in 84 i think possibly 85 (it was a while ago) he also did some huge canyons from quarterpipe to quarterpie and also moved them further apart too. Seem to recall him crashing out a fair few times too.
