when is old school-old school???
« on: January 03, 2010, 05:18 PM »
Been trawling through various ads and listings on the hunt for more bikes and bits and I'm getting confused by reading "old school bmx" and its a 1996 model, to me thats fairly modern .

My question is, is there a defined date line from old school to mid school to new???

Or am I just being picky  ;D

Its hard to say, in 100 years time it will all be old skool  ???

But I think of the 80s & before as old skool, the 90s as Mid & the 00 as New Skool

But the last few years have seen another change, where frames, bikes etc have gotten much lighter, so that could be another turning point  ???

:) Here we go! To me 96 would be mid.Anything with a 1 1/8 headtube & u or v-brake lugs would be mid-new with plenty of variants along the way...Another reason you`ll see not so old bikes advertised as Old School is `cos the sellers have heard that some OS bikes are valuable & automatically assume they`ll retire on the proceeds of any POS bike. :daumenhoch:

Depends what it's for...

If collecting, then OS is mid 80's and before

If riding for race and fun purposes then OS is 1" stem and caliper brakes...not many of us could afford mid 80's and before as riders.  All of us deserve some fun.

I think the best indication of dates for old/mid/new school are the categories for Bike of the Year.
