powder coating over chrome plate
« on: March 21, 2006, 10:15 AM »
my local powder coaters doesnt do stripping / dipping. they have to "send it away" at an extra cost

i have a few frames that are chrome plated (but tatty)

can i just get them powder coated over the chrome plate?

also will powder coat go ok over nickel plate (a la old mongoose) ?

Graeme,

I think the chrome needs a key before it is powdercoated

My powdercoaters always shot blast the frames and forks regardless of whether they are chrome or painted. Costs me £30 all in usually.

Get it blasted for best results . . . if not use emery cloth to leave a good key

Make sure there are no signs of pitting or chrome flake as these will show though the fresh powder

Cheers

In my view they are pretty good especially at the price. I have used them a few times and haven't used anyone else so I cannot compare. The good thing is they don't coat too thick so there are no snot or drips on dropouts etc
