My Mid Life Crisis
« on: March 21, 2006, 12:56 AM »
Hi, I have just liberated my original BMX from my parents garage after 20 plus years...  I believe it is an 82 Haro Freestyler - chrome has surface rust - but i hope this can be cleaned - the rest of the bike can be best described as lived in (as these things should be)...!  I am looking to get this thing rolling again and would appreciate any suggestions / advice on cleaning and parts.

Always fancied a set of flights, and going back to a set of black tuffs (currently they are yellow painted green).  Have had a quick scan around - what is the word on the twin pinch bolt flights...?

Will post some pictures if anyone is interested...?

Cool bike mate! I'd get the black tuffs and throw the flights on, then clean her up and leave it as is. Try Autosol or mothers chrome polish with aluminium foil as a scourer. The foil won't scratch the frame like steel wool will. :daumenhoch:

So a few nights solvent abuse it is then - paintstripper, autosolv and tin foil - makes for a great shopping basket.  The number is something like (to protect the innocent) T SS 11 xx F

xx is a very low number.

PM me the number if you're concerned at giving it out willy nilly. The reason I ask is because I'm trying to build a 'database' of the serial numbers in order to try and date them correctly (as of yet I've failed miserably)

Nice one dude. It's always cool to restore your old ride...brings back loads of good memories. I did mine last year and it'll be the only bike I'll keep.

For the chrome, I'd just use a soft cloth, autosol and a couple of hours in front of the telly rubbing it! Works a treat. Just work in small areas and wide off the residue before it dries (as it becomes abrasive). This method will work on most parts including the crank arms, so try everything before buying new stuff.

I'm with most of the guys here, stick with original stuff - single piece cranks and all. It's nice to have flights, but I would keep it the way you rode it for true originality.

Get some replacement decals from Vert-Ego (www.vert-ego.com) - just take real care putting them on as you need to allow for the positioning of the chainring (i.e. don't put them too low down as the chainring will cover part of it - have a look at Dave Rom-bloke's Gen 1 for good positioning).

Anyhow mate, enjoy your project - it get's all consuming, but the end result will be worth it!

Welcome to the site!

Cheers

Dave

wow that is in good nick for it's age. You're lucky to still have it, many of us sold our original rides for a pathetic amount of cash.

Nice one, can't wait to see it restored.
